INSURANCE

The data you protect outlives the encryption protecting it.

Insurers hold some of the longest-lived confidential data of any industry. Quantum Sentinel helps you find where that data’s cryptography is exposed, and plan a transition that matches how long you must keep it safe.

Why it matters here

Insurance runs on data that stays sensitive for decades — life and annuity policies, beneficiary and health-underwriting records, and long-tail liability claims that can remain open for a generation. Dr Michele Mosca’s simple test captures the risk: if the years your data must stay secret, plus the years it takes you to migrate, exceed the years until a capable quantum computer arrives, you are already exposed. For insurers, the first term alone can run to decades — which is why “harvest now, decrypt later” is not a future problem for this sector, but a present one.

The regulatory picture

These are the drivers shaping cryptographic governance in insurance — not claims that any framework mandates post-quantum cryptography by name.

DORA

In force since January 2025, DORA applies to insurers, reinsurers and larger intermediaries, with explicit obligations on cryptographic controls and key management.

Solvency II & operational resilience

Prudential and ICT-risk expectations increasingly treat cryptographic and operational resilience as board-level concerns, now aligned with DORA for in-scope firms.

Data-protection law

Under GDPR/UK GDPR, health, genetic and biometric data are special-category information carrying a higher bar for “appropriate” security — a bar that lengthens as classical cryptography weakens.

NAIC Insurance Data Security Model Law

Across many US states, insurers must encrypt non-public information in transit and at rest — controls whose durability the quantum transition puts in question.
